Chairman’s Report - July 2011

Welcome back to all Old Blues for what promises to be another fantastic season. Having once again achieved promotion – that’s three in a row folks – we look forward to rejoining the London leagues after several years in Surrey.

We kick of with a “small tour” (40 Players and 25 Alikadoos!!) to Argentina to play 2 matches in Buenos Aires and 2 matches Cordoba. This promises to be a great bonding event and a fantastic opportunity to sample Argentine rugby……and hospitality. We wish all our brave tourists a fantastic and successful time on tour – it’s what the Blues do best!

With the firsts achieving promotion in an exciting play off game against Hampshire’s Eastleigh the seconds also had a fine season and ended up a very close 2nd in the Surrey 2 Conference. I am sure that with continued efforts and availabilities next season they will be able to comfortably hit the top of the table.

Many thanks to Richie Flynne, James Eaton and Olly Derbyshire for all their hard work in getting teams out and delivering some excellent results.

The thirds ended up mid table in the Surrey Combination 3 league and continue to gather momentum and with numbers continuing to swell. I hope we can look forward to a full list of fixtures for the illustrious Bedouins in 2011/12.

The Vets have sadly all but diminished but in there place we have been fielding “Los Revolutionaries” – a brave bunch of die hards and club men who gallantly take to the field following a battle cry from the likes of Rigsy and Steve O’Shea

And so we eagerly await another fine season of Old Blues Rugby. Plans are all in place. Pre season training timetables have been announced, the clubhouse has had the customary spring clean and we have a new boiler so hot showers are once again available! Fixtures are confirmed!

The regular annual improvements to the shared pitch this year and additionally we have verti drained and seeded our second pitch as well as repairing and seeding parts of the top pitch. Additionally a number of trees have come down (about 40 in total) to prevent them falling down and spoiling a match! Expect a very good bonfire night!! If anyone wishes to sponsor any new plantings to fill the gaps please contact me.

We are actively looking for members to put themselves forward for a number of vacant positions within the club. As a club we rely largely on volunteers to “step up” and without them the burden rests heavy on the shoulders of a few. Can I implore members to study the “situations vacant” published by Olly and make themselves known.

Please ensure you are paying the correct subscription by monthly direct debit – the subs police are out! This can be done easily online, amounts, debit forms and payment details are all available on the website.

I would like to thank again all the hard working officers of the club as well as our generous sponsor Hdi Gerling for all the support they have shown both last season and for this coming season

Finally, good luck to everyone for a great Tour and a fantastic 2011/2012 season.

Will Fairbairn (Shoulders!)
