Old Blues vs Askeans
Following last week's pre-season match, we travelled across London to play Askeans in the first round of the National Cup. Determined to put right the mistakes of the CL game, the Old Blues were aggressive and focussed going into the match. However, nerves put us on the back foot for the first ten minutes, and we defended our line with resolve. The midfield pairing of James Mitra and Alex Blunt soon decided that the best way to get us out of the fix was to run the ball, and we soon managed to turn the screw with possession and territory. Good lineout ball in the Askeans 22 saw Jhan Burger smash over for a try, and quick hands from the backs then followed that up with a score for winger David D'Netto. A second for Burger saw us go into the break 19-0 up, and from there we controlled the second half well. James Mitra was cutting great lines from outside centre and scrum-half Mike Gray made some searing breaks from the base. More pleasing from the coaching aspect was the defensive return - despite a spirited fightback from Askeans we still managed to keep the game a nil; a much needed shot of confidence following last week's loss. SPECIAL NOTE - many thanks for the support, and subsequent drinking company, of Mr Chris Bugge of Austin, Texas. Chris played for the Old Blues from 63-70 and very kindly spent his Saturday afternoon supporting his old club. Great to see you Chris and we hope to see you again either here in London or in warmer climes!
