Old Blues vs Reigate

The Old Blues had an early start on Saturday, getting back to business in the league against Reigate after their week off. Despite enjoying clear skies on the day, the Reigate pitch was looking fairly heavy and it was clear that this was going to be a day for the fat lads up front. Things got off to a frantic if scrappy start with both packs clearly up for some fun and games in the mud and a penalty and an excellent try resulting from some brilliant link play between the back row and the midfield help the Blues settle into the game. However, the conditions underfoot meant that this was never going to be a day when the champagne would flow, despite the efforts of both sides and the Blues went in to the half time break leading by 10-0. The second half saw a more realistic game being played by both sides and the Blues slowly started to take control, combining a streetwise kicking game with some pretty solid rucking and the pack establishing increasing dominance in the scrum. This began to pay off when the Blues managed to go over for their second try of the day off the back of a scrum 10m out from the Reigate line. Two more scored in either corner sealed the deal and the final whistle went (eventually…) with the Blues 27-0 up. It was a solid performance by the Blues and much harder work than the scoreline might suggest. There was plenty of food for thought in terms of areas to work on, however you are always going to be pleased with keeping a clean sheet. There were some outstanding performances up front from the likes of Alex Demenis, who touched down twice and HdM Rob “the Hulk” Huckin who was at his marauding best on the open side flank. Next week the Blues will be taking a trip down to the coast to take on US Portsmouth in the cup.
